Job Description
Caterpillar is currently scheduled to hire qualified professionals for the position of Automation Engineer. Candidates holding a B.E / B.Tech / B.Sc degree with at least 1 year of experience in software or platform engineering are highly encouraged to apply. As part of a broader modernization program at Caterpillar, your daily operations will involve assisting in the comprehensive design, development, and delivery of enterprise Java-based applications and microservices. You will write clean, maintainable, secure, and highly efficient code aligned with internal engineering standards, participate actively in peer code reviews, and collaborate closely with senior developers, architects, and product team members to understand requirements and implement scalable solutions. The role also includes supporting the functional analysis and modernization enhancements of existing or legacy software systems, working alongside DevOps teams to streamline build, continuous integration, and cloud deployment processes, troubleshooting runtime issues, debugging application bottlenecks, and supporting production fixes. You will contribute to structural improvements focused on application performance, reliability, and ease of maintainability, and learn, explore, and apply modern automation techniques to boost ongoing development efficiency.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Application Development: Assist in the comprehensive design, development, and delivery of enterprise Java-based applications and microservices.
- Code Quality: Writing clean, maintainable, secure, and highly efficient code aligned with internal engineering standards.
- Code Reviews: Participating actively in peer code reviews and incorporating feedback to systematically elevate code quality.
- Collaboration: Collaborating closely with senior developers, architects, and product team members to understand requirements and implement scalable solutions.
- System Modernization: Supporting the functional analysis and modernization enhancements of existing or legacy software systems.
- DevOps Support: Working alongside DevOps teams to streamline build, continuous integration, and cloud deployment processes.
- Troubleshooting & Debugging: Troubleshooting runtime issues, debugging application bottlenecks, and supporting production fixes.
- Performance Improvement: Contributing to structural improvements focused on application performance, reliability, and ease of maintainability.
- Automation: Learning, exploring, and applying modern automation techniques to boost ongoing development efficiency.
Skills and Eligibility Criteria
Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
Experience: Minimum of 1+ years of professional experience in software engineering, platform engineering, or working with distributed systems.
Mandatory Technical Skills:
- Java/J2EE (Good understanding)
- Core OOP concepts
- Basic software design patterns
- Spring framework (Spring Boot is highly preferred)
- REST APIs (Hands-on experience building)
- Database connectivity layers (JPA, Hibernate, JDBC) (Basic working knowledge)
- SQL skills (Reliable)
- Unit testing frameworks (JUnit) (Familiarity)
- Git (including basic branching) (Working knowledge)
- Build automation tools (Maven or Gradle) (Working knowledge)
Competencies:
- Strong debugging and logical problem-solving skills
- Active eagerness to master new technologies
- Prior exposure to Docker, containerization technologies, or cloud computing platforms (Preferred Plus)
- Basic understanding of application scalability, system integrations, automation techniques, or AI/ML integration trends (Preferred Plus)
