Job Description
Stripe is hiring for the position of Software Engineer, Intern. Candidates pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline can apply for this internship. The Stripe internship program provides students with an opportunity to work on real production software, contribute to meaningful engineering projects, and collaborate with experienced engineers and cross-functional teams. Interns will gain practical experience in software development, systems design, testing, and code reviews. As an intern, you will work on real engineering projects that are part of the company's product roadmap, expected to contribute software that can be used in production.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Software Development: Write software that is deployed to production and has a meaningful impact on Stripe customers; Participate in software design and implementation activities.
- Feedback & Collaboration: Give and receive technical feedback through code reviews and design discussions; Collaborate with engineers and cross-functional stakeholders.
- System Understanding: Understand existing systems and contribute to improvements; Learn unfamiliar technologies, systems, and codebases quickly.
- Mentorship: Work with an intern manager and experienced engineers throughout the internship.
- Communication: Communicate project progress and technical decisions clearly.
- Quality: Test software and maintain high-quality engineering standards.
Skills and Eligibility Criteria
Educational Background: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
Experience: Experience participating in previous internships or multi-person projects; Open-source contributions or other collaborative projects demonstrating the ability to receive and incorporate feedback are also relevant. At least 2 years of university education, or equivalent work experience (Preferred).
Mandatory Technical Skills:
- Strong fundamental understanding of computer science concepts.
- Some experience and familiarity with programming through coursework, personal projects, or other practical experience.
- Knowledge of one specific language is not necessarily required; strong programming fundamentals and general computer science knowledge are more important.
- Specialized knowledge in one or more technical areas combined with broader software engineering knowledge (Preferred).
- Understanding of frontend technologies and basic understanding of how backend services process HTTP requests (Preferred).
- Experience writing high-quality pull requests with appropriate test coverage (Preferred).
- Understanding of software testing and writing reliable code with minimal defects (Preferred).
- Ability to navigate and work within unfamiliar codebases involving multiple programming languages (Preferred).
Competencies:
- Ability to learn unfamiliar systems through independent research, mentorship, and collaboration with subject matter experts.
- Ability to clearly communicate technical work to stakeholders, team members, and other engineers (Preferred).
