Job Description
As a Software Engineer Intern at Stripe, candidates will work on real engineering projects that are part of the company's product roadmap. Key responsibilities include writing software deployed to production, participating in design and implementation, giving and receiving technical feedback, and collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders. Interns are expected to learn unfamiliar technologies and contribute meaningfully.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Software Development: Write software that is deployed to production and has a meaningful impact on Stripe customers.
- Design & Implementation: Participate in software design and implementation activities.
- Feedback & Collaboration: Give and receive technical feedback through code reviews and design discussions.
- System Understanding: Understand existing systems and contribute to improvements. Learn unfamiliar technologies, systems, and codebases quickly.
- Mentorship & Communication: Work with an intern manager and experienced engineers throughout the internship. Communicate project progress and technical decisions clearly.
- Quality & Testing: Test software and maintain high-quality engineering standards.
Skills and Eligibility Criteria
Educational Background: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline. At least 2 years of university education, or equivalent work experience (Preferred).
Experience: Some experience and familiarity with programming through coursework, personal projects, or other practical experience. Experience participating in previous internships or multi-person projects. Open-source contributions or other collaborative projects demonstrating the ability to receive and incorporate feedback are also relevant.
Mandatory Technical Skills:
- Strong fundamental understanding of computer science concepts.
- Ability to learn unfamiliar systems through independent research, mentorship, and collaboration with subject matter experts.
- Specialized knowledge in one or more technical areas combined with broader software engineering knowledge (Preferred).
- Understanding of frontend technologies and basic understanding of how backend services process HTTP requests (Preferred).
- Experience writing high-quality pull requests with appropriate test coverage (Preferred).
- Understanding of software testing and writing reliable code with minimal defects (Preferred).
- Ability to navigate and work within unfamiliar codebases involving multiple programming languages (Preferred).
Competencies:
- Ability to clearly communicate technical work to stakeholders, team members, and other engineers (Preferred).
