Job Description
As a Software Engineer Intern at Stripe, you will work on real engineering projects that are part of the company's product roadmap, writing software deployed to production that meaningfully impacts Stripe customers. You will participate in software design and implementation activities, giving and receiving technical feedback through code reviews and design discussions. The role involves collaborating with engineers and cross-functional stakeholders, understanding existing systems, and contributing to improvements, while learning unfamiliar technologies and codebases quickly under the guidance of an intern manager and experienced engineers. You will also test software and maintain high-quality engineering standards.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Software Development: Write software that is deployed to production and has a meaningful impact on Stripe customers.
- Design & Implementation: Participate in software design and implementation activities.
- Feedback: Give and receive technical feedback through code reviews and design discussions.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with engineers and cross-functional stakeholders.
- System Understanding: Understand existing systems and contribute to improvements.
- Learning: Learn unfamiliar technologies, systems, and codebases quickly.
- Mentorship: Work with an intern manager and experienced engineers throughout the internship.
- Communication: Communicate project progress and technical decisions clearly.
- Quality: Test software and maintain high-quality engineering standards.
Skills and Eligibility Criteria
Educational Background: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
Experience: Some experience and familiarity with programming through coursework, personal projects, or other practical experience. Experience participating in previous internships or multi-person projects. Open-source contributions or other collaborative projects demonstrating the ability to receive and incorporate feedback are also relevant.
Mandatory Technical Skills:
- Strong fundamental understanding of computer science concepts
- Ability to learn unfamiliar systems through independent research, mentorship, and collaboration with subject matter experts
- At least 2 years of university education, or equivalent work experience (Preferred Qualification)
- Specialized knowledge in one or more technical areas combined with broader software engineering knowledge (Preferred Qualification)
- Understanding of frontend technologies and basic understanding of how backend services process HTTP requests (Preferred Qualification)
- Experience writing high-quality pull requests with appropriate test coverage (Preferred Qualification)
- Understanding of software testing and writing reliable code with minimal defects (Preferred Qualification)
- Ability to navigate and work within unfamiliar codebases involving multiple programming languages (Preferred Qualification)

- Ability to clearly communicate technical work to stakeholders, team members, and other engineers
