Job Description
Stripe is hiring for the position of Software Engineer, Intern. Candidates pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline can apply for this internship opportunity. Roles and Responsibilities
- Software Development: Write software that is deployed to production and has a meaningful impact on Stripe customers; Participate in software design and implementation activities.
- Feedback & Collaboration: Give and receive technical feedback through code reviews and design discussions; Collaborate with engineers and cross-functional stakeholders.
- System Improvement: Understand existing systems and contribute to improvements.
- Learning: Learn unfamiliar technologies, systems, and codebases quickly.
- Mentorship & Communication: Work with an intern manager and experienced engineers throughout the internship; Communicate project progress and technical decisions clearly.
- Quality Assurance: Test software and maintain high-quality engineering standards.
Skills and Eligibility Criteria
Educational Background: Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
Experience: Some experience and familiarity with programming through coursework, personal projects, or other practical experience. Experience participating in previous internships or multi-person projects. Open-source contributions or other collaborative projects demonstrating the ability to receive and incorporate feedback are also relevant. At least 2 years of university education, or equivalent work experience (preferred).
Mandatory Technical Skills:
- Strong fundamental understanding of computer science concepts
- Programming (Java, Ruby, JavaScript, Scala, Go, etc.)
Competencies:
- Ability to learn unfamiliar systems through independent research, mentorship, and collaboration with subject matter experts
- Specialized knowledge in one or more technical areas combined with broader software engineering knowledge (preferred)
- Understanding of frontend technologies and basic understanding of how backend services process HTTP requests (preferred)
- Experience writing high-quality pull requests with appropriate test coverage (preferred)
- Understanding of software testing and writing reliable code with minimal defects (preferred)
- Ability to navigate and work within unfamiliar codebases involving multiple programming languages (preferred)
- Ability to clearly communicate technical work to stakeholders, team members, and other engineers (preferred)
