Job Description
As a Software Development Engineer 1 at WEX, you will join the Risk Engineering organization and contribute to systems that process and manage large amounts of business and operational data. This is an entry-level engineering role, but the technical scope is broad. You will not be limited to writing application code. The job description includes data ingestion, data cleaning, enrichment, processing, serving, quality measurement, cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, monitoring, Infrastructure as Code, and data modeling. You will work with one or more programming languages including Java, C#, Golang, and Python. You will also work with SQL and relational databases and learn how data flows through large-scale systems. The role emphasizes learning and mentorship. Engineers are expected to seek reviews from senior developers, learn internal engineering practices, work with peers, and progressively take ownership of more complex tasks.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Collaboration: Collaborate with stakeholders to understand customer and business problems.
- Design & Develop: Design, test, code, and instrument new data products, systems, and platforms.
- Software Components: Develop software components for small- and medium-complexity problems.
- Data Pipelines: Build and maintain data pipelines covering the end-to-end data lifecycle.
- Data Processing: Support data ingestion, cleaning, processing, enrichment, optimization, and serving.
- Data Quality: Develop systems for measuring and monitoring data quality.
- Data Management: Support metadata management, data catalogs, and Master Data Management initiatives.
- CI/CD: Learn and maintain CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions.
- Infrastructure as Code: Implement Infrastructure as Code using tools such as Terraform.
- Cloud Infrastructure: Support provisioning and management of cloud-based data infrastructure.
- Engineering Practices: Apply software development practices such as TDD and BDD.
- Architecture: Work with microservices and vertical slice architecture patterns.
- Production Support: Support live data systems and production platforms.
- Monitoring & Incident Response: Participate in proactive monitoring and incident response activities.
- System Improvement: Investigate existing systems to identify bottlenecks and improvement opportunities.
- Big Data: Develop and maintain reliable, secure, and scalable big data platforms and tools.
- Data Quality: Support data quality measurement and monitoring systems.
- Big Data Integration: Learn and integrate big data technologies with WEX platforms.
- Data Modeling: Apply data modeling techniques to create efficient and usable data structures.
- Collaboration & Learning: Collaborate with peers and senior engineers to improve solution quality. Continuously learn new technologies and engineering practices.
Skills and Eligibility Criteria
Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. Demonstrable equivalent capability may also be considered.
Experience: 1 year of software engineering experience is listed as a plus.
Mandatory Technical Skills:
- Strong implementation skills in Java, C#, Golang, Python, or similar programming languages.
- Knowledge of data ingestion, cleaning, processing, enrichment, serving, and data quality.
- Understanding of SQL and relational algebra.
- Knowledge of relational databases and data systems.
- Understanding of extract, load, and transform workflows (ELT).
- Basic understanding of data warehousing and dimensional modeling.
- Familiarity with continuous integration and delivery pipelines (CI/CD).
- Exposure to Terraform is an advantage.
- Awareness of microservices and vertical slice architectures.
Competencies:
- Understanding of automated testing and engineering quality practices.
- Interest or experience with cloud technologies and infrastructure.
- Understanding of measurement, monitoring, and production support.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
